The Secret Handshake is a pretty well known band therefore doors will be opened on smaller indie labels. Once Mystery Skulls catches on they are going to explode onto the “indie” scene, too bad mix-tapes aren’t being shared any more… Potential: 9.5/10 – I believe in this band, or side-project, and feel that it can really go places even beyond the festival circuits. I would expect the first full length to have more focus. My Grade: 8/10 – the EP jumps around a lot and doesn’t have a succinct viewpoint, with that being said it’s an EP and you should be showing range. Watch out for Mystery Skulls on next Summer’s festival circuit, just don’t inhale those big balloons floating around. I truly believe that Mystery Skulls can be the next Girl Talk, however they have a wider range since it is not just mixing songs and splicing them together. I can picture the live shows being hectic and a lot of fun to go to with PBRs being handed out, tight jeans a plenty and a ton of Kayne West inspired shades being worn by everyone. With that being said it won’t be mainstream, of course this is subject to change of the industry which fluctuates daily but doesn’t give any indication that it is moving toward this sounds, unless commercial, television shows and movies are successful – in my mind that is success. IFS Film Festival 2015 - Best Music Video Los Angeles Independant Film Festival Awards - Best Music Video. Artist: Mystery Skulls Label: Warner Bros. Through the twist and turns of this EP there is one thing for sure, if Mystery Skulls continues on this path they are poised for a great career. MYSTERY SKULLS - MAGIC Directed by Double Ninja. No other song displays this more than in the lead song “Amazing”, a heavy synth-laden pop song that, despite comparisons earlier to more laid back and artsy performers, fits more in the pocket with the song “Moneygrabber” by Fitz and the Tantrums. He knows how to construct the verse-pre-chrous- chorus-verse-bridge-chorus mixture and keep the listener wanting more. The first public activity of the band was through its Tumblr account, which made its first post on Augwith a video of the song 'Amazing.' Their first commercial release, a 5 song EP, debuted on December 30, 2011. Luis Dubuc, probably because of his time with The Secret Handshake, knows the intricacies of writing and arranging songs that work well throughout. Mystery Skulls began as a project by Luis Dubuc, formerly of The Secret Handshake. Mystery Skulls pumps new life and talent into a sub-genre that can really be overlooked by many who don’t know it exists. 009 DEPOTWAVE - Songs originally made for/used in TV commercials (Home Depot Theme, Like A Good Neighbor, Oscar Mayer Wiener Jingle, Sexy Grandpa Time) (Soy Yo, Midnight City, Sail, MAC TONIGHT) - Songs relating to construction (Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite, Super Mario Maker, We Built This City) - Songs relating to robots and machinery (Daft Punk, Till I Collapse, Mr. This band really rides the thin line between bands that fall in the synth-pop groove like Wavves and artists like Ellie Goulding and Grimes. Mystery Skulls doesn’t employ the big fuzz bass that DFA1979 does but they do hit you hard with heavy synth infused mixes over drum machines that provide upbeat dance music that is more fitting for a house party in the East Village than a sold out dance club on the Jersey Shore. Mystery Skulls reminds me a lot of Death From Above 1979, which gives you soft vocals over quick heavy beats. A band on the forefront of emerging technologies should be a record labels dream. By generating a following through the use of informed media the word can spread more easily to others and generate a snowball effect that carries Mystery Skulls to it’s intended destination. An interesting take on the way music can be published and shared through the use of social media while also maintaining an open channel of communications between himself and his fans. Started as a side project by Luis Dubuc, formally of the band The Secret Handshake, Mystery Skulls has been releasing new music through his Tumblr account. More of a tribute to the 70’s days of dance music – no, not disco – you can hear influences of motown and early R&B, especially in his high falsetto voice. That comparison is also not really fair, mostly because the majority of the music they blast without restraint in those stores is house/dance music that doesn’t have the same integrity as Mystery Skulls. I hate making comparisons like this, especially because the cogitation may be negative, but Mystery Skulls has that I just entered into Abercrombie & Fitch and even though I’m not going to buy anything from this store I want to hear the rest of this song vibe.
